You may be familiar with the Leader as Coach approach, a leadership style that focuses less on directing and more on asking questions, listening deeply, and guiding others to find their own solutions. Instead of simply telling people what to do, leaders create space for reflection, curiosity, and growth, helping their teams develop confidence, resilience, and problem-solving skills.
What’s exciting is how easily this mindset transfers into parenting. When we approach our children from the place of the adult, rather than reacting from our own childhood experiences, we create space for reflection, connection, and growth for both them and us. Parenting from the adult self allows us to notice patterns, pause before responding, and engage with empathy instead of habit or emotion.
This everyday practice also involves reflecting on how we were parented ourselves. Recognizing the patterns, assumptions, and triggers we carry allows us to consciously choose how we respond, rather than repeating old dynamics. Showing vulnerability, admitting we don’t have all the answers models lifelong learning and teaches our children that curiosity and self-awareness are strengths.
This philosophy is at the heart of my workshops. In The Evolving Parent, we explore adult development, self-reflection, and holistic wellbeing, helping participants understand their own patterns, triggers, and ways of responding to life’s challenges.
In Communication That Connects, we introduce the Parent–Adult–Child model of Transactional Analysis as a framework for self-awareness and relational insight, uncovering habitual interaction patterns and shifting toward more conscious, empowering ways of relating.
Both workshops equip adults with practical tools to engage from their adult selves, enhancing clarity, resilience, and connection in all areas of life.
Parenting, like leadership, isn’t about doing more. It’s about being mindful, responding with awareness, and guiding from the place of the adult—and in doing so, helping both our children and ourselves grow.
